The shoulder joint is one of the most used joints in our body. Many day-to-day activities require the use of the shoulder or we must say every hand movement involves the shoulder joint. While on the other hand, sportspeople who play cricket, basketball, baseball, and tennis have maximum use of the shoulder joint. Thus, it won’t be wrong to say that the shoulder is highly prone to injuries and they often result in severe pain. Sometimes, the injury is so severe that Orthopaedic Implants are required for the treatment.
In this post, we will have a look at some of the common causes of shoulder pain along with the treatment.
What Could Cause Shoulder Pain?
There are many factors and conditions that could result in shoulder pain. One of the common causes of shoulder pain is rotate cuff injury. This injury is characterized by inflammation or damage to tendons present in the shoulder joint. Overuse and wear & tear are a few of the common causes of rotate cuff injury.
Impingement syndrome is another condition that could cause shoulder pain. Here, the rotate cuff gets caught between the acromium and humeral head. This is also a painful condition and it may prevent the affected person from using his/her shoulder. Besides these, fractures and dislocations can also be the reason for shoulder pain and the severity of the condition will decide the intensity of the pain. There are also degenerative conditions like arthritis that could cause persistent pain that may be mild or severe.
Sometimes, an injury occurring in the neck or biceps can also lead to shoulder pain. This type of pain is known as referred pain.
How is Shoulder Pain Diagnosed?
The diagnosis of shoulder pain is made by examining the medical history of the patient. At first, the healthcare service provider performs a physical examination to notice visible symptoms like swelling, tenderness, and bruising. Besides this, the range of motion of the shoulder joint will also be assessed for correct diagnosis. Now to confirm the exact cause, the doctor will order imaging tests like x-ray, MRI, and/or CT scan. The report of the imaging tests will help the healthcare service provider properly diagnose the right cause of shoulder pain.
How is the Shoulder Pain Treated?
The treatment of shoulder pain will depend on the cause disclosed during diagnosis along with the severity of the condition. In mild to moderate cases, the pain can be managed with rest and prescribed analgesics and NSAIDs. Sometimes, an injection may also be applied.
If the condition is severe like dislocation or fracture, immobilization using a cast or splint may be done and if required, surgery will be recommended.
Most often, the RICE method works the best in improving painful shoulder symptoms, and surgery is always kept as the last treatment option.
